Over at addiction.com they are highlighting National Recovery Month by asking their writers–and anyone in recovery–what recovery means to them. Here is what I had to say:

“In this picture I’m in my favorite place in the world (Lake Tahoe) with my favorite being in the world (my dog, Sally). Before I got sober, I never would have been able to care for a dog. I was so involved with my active addiction that every moment of my day was consumed with how, when and where I was next going to be able to drink (and how I could hide it from others). Taking care of something else would have been out of the question. Not only is that an unfortunate state of being, I was missing out on so much. Sally brings so much love and joy into my life; I sometimes refer to her as the best antidepressant I have ever taken. The simple act of taking a walk with my dog on the beach would have been too complicated for me pre-sobriety and now it’s one of the biggest joys in my life.”
