Lake Tahoe is the first place I loved–the place in the world that still feels the most like home to me. While there has always been talk about the lake getting lower, in the last 10 years it’s become exponentially more pronounced. These are pictures of my family’s pier. In 2006, my friend–a guy over 6 feet tall–could dive off the end of this pier. Watching this lake recede is like watching a loved one with dementia slip away, slowly at first and then what seems like impossibly fast. Only in this case, the loved one is the state of California.
